Brainstorming Part 2: New Pantheons

Another potential next phase of the project would be to start creating pantheons for races that should have them, or have a mention of a pantheon but with very little detail. Many of these races are from Spelljammer, of course.

Grippli & Grung

Grippli worship a “small frog-like deity” but also have evil snake gods and spider goddesses in their pantheon. The snake and spider gods would probably be Merrshaulk and Lolth, but “pantheon” implies that they worship more than just the one frog-like deity, who is unlikely to be Ramenos. Similarly, the Grung worship a deity (who would be evil) who could be Ramenos, but also could be part of the overall “frog” pantheon of the Grippli, or they could be independent.

Kercpa

These small squirrel-folk worship a single deity, a “nameless earth goddess” usually depicted as an oak tree. Could be Verenestra but it seems unlikely, while it could also be Rillifane Rallathil in female form. I’d be inclined to make a new deity though. She should be an outer member of the Seelie Court.

Thri-Kreen

The Thri-kreen of Spelljammer worship the “Mantis God of the Eternal Lotus.” Not a whole lot has been written about this deity, but it appears to have a monastic and deeply thoughtful aspect, while also potentially being a deity of conquest.

Loxo

The loxo of the Forgotten Realms are Spelljamming immigrants to Toril, so they should have a homeworld somewhere and a full pantheon. There’s no real information about what their faith is like.

K’r’r’r

The K’r’r’r of Spelljammer worship the “Wise Queen,” who is a humanoid-headed spider goddess implied to possibly be Lolth, but their Lawful Neutral alignment makes that unlikely.

Dracon

The dracon worship a pantheon headed by the Ub-Kalla, the leader of a “herd” style pantheon, with gods of war, fetility, storms, and the sea. I’m inclined to make Io, the Ninefold Dragon, their Ub-Kalla, with an independent pantheon of dracon-form deities beneath him, rather than the other draconic pantheon, as none really fit and dragons do not appear to be native to the Dracon homeworld.

Grommam

The grommam have demigods who live amongst them on their homeworld. My take is that these gods act as “divine rulers” of their various nations, although they would still have full pantheon worship throughout society.

The portfolios that I picture them having would be:
—Combat, wrestling, strength (LG)
—Curiosity, adventuring (CG)
—Social customs, familial relations (LG)
—Foraging, food gathering, discovery of hidden items (NG)
—Fertility, motherhood, children (LG)
—Trading, business, commerce (LG)
—Farming, agriculture (NG)
—Earth, nature, trees, climbing (TN), possibly including druids
—Death (NE)

Hurwaeti

The hurwaeti are an ancient race who once had a sphere-spanning empire that was destroyed, possibly by a coalition or repeated attacks by illithids, neogi, and beholders. Many of their planetary remnants have become lizard-man-esque Swamp Wiggles and sahuagin-esque Salt Wiggles. Their pantheon should have altered to better represent the now semi-nomadic spacefaring hurwaeti and the primitive swamp wiggles.

The portfolios I have thought up for them so far are:
—Art, manufacturing – LN, f
—Discipline, honor, combat – LN, m
—Altruism – NG, f
—Age, wisdom – LG, f
—Sailing – N, m
—Greed, covetousness, war – CE, m
—Hunting, fishing – LN, f
—Oral Storytelling – CG, f
—Agriculture – N, m
—Death – NE, m
—Water – CN, m
—Weather, fog – CN, f

Zalani

The Zalani are one of the major races of the Vodoni empire, and with the collapse of the empire would likely become a major trading and exploratory race. They are of frightening appearance, very similar to gargoyles, but actually peaceful and diplomatic, and they are excellent architects and ship designers. They never really got the write up that they deserved.

The start of the pantheon as I envision it:
—The High Builder/The Architect (male supreme god)
—The Thoughtful Speaker/The Diplomat (female supreme god; represented as the sun which is called The Light Of Knowledge)
—Artist god
—Farming god
—War god (righteous/protective aspect; minor power)
—Evil god of brutality, murder, slaughter

Dohwar

The dohwar worship a variety of trading deities and see their pantheon as being structured as a corporation, with foreign commerce deities being “franchisees.” I envision it as very modernly structured with a President (chief deity), Vice Presidents of things like agriculture, medicine, mining, and that sort of thing, in a “Celestial Corporation” that has a deep dislike of Shang-Ti’s Celestial Bureaucracy.

Other Races

There are a number of other races that should have a god or pantheon as well, but I haven’t gotten around to thinking about what their deities would be like. Races such as hadozee, plasmoids, rastipedes, rock hoppers, and xixchil all should have dedicated gods or pantheons. Anyone know of any other races that have organized, social existences that should have patrons?

It’s not Spelljammer, but how about Harpies? They don’t appear to have a deity in any of the lore, and when I wanted to create a harpy shaman for my game, I went with the unsatisfying “worship the elements” option.

I think they could be an interesting opportunity for a malevolent music-based religion.

    • AuldDragon says:

Harpies as described in 2e don’t really have a society, so I don’t think they’d have a religion of their own, and as creatures taken entirely from Greek myth, I would think they’d worship Greek deities when they do worship.

Maybe it’s because I’m a 1e guy, but I’ve never heard of any of these species you listed (except Thri-Keeen). I think you should focus on brewing things that have broader appeal.

    • AuldDragon says:

Many of them are Spelljammer creatures, as I said, and I’m primarily a Spelljammer guy, so they appeal a lot to me. ;)

Tangently related to Spelljammer and Realmspace, there is a Faerunian demipower named Jessar, who holds dominion over the dark side of the moon. She was briefly mentioned in a Living City module. Here’s the link to her wiki article:

I want to look some of faith & avatar format gods. for example, Ravanna for rakshasa (dragon #84), Demon prince graz’zt (indeed he is not godling. Why can he oppose to F&A version Demogorgon & Orcus?)

    • AuldDragon says:

Ravanna would be on the agenda under the Indian pantheon, and Graz’zt I don’t really see having much of a cult, certainly not one with specialty priests, since he specifically doesn’t want to become a god.
