Brainstorming Part 9: Indian Mythos

Indian mythos is another of the pantheons that I do not know enough about to tackle, especially considering Hinduism is a very large modern faith. I would want to emphasize the more ancient aspects that may not hold in the faith today, to better separate it from any sort of apparent value judgements on the modern faith.

—Agni (1e DD, 2e L&L)
—Brahman (2e L&L)
—Brihaspati (2e L&L)

—Kartikeya (1e DD)
—Lakshmi (1e DD)
—Mitra (2e L&L)
—Puchan (2e L&L)
—Ratri (1e DD, 2e L&L)
—Rudra (1e DD, 2e L&L)
—Savitri (2e L&L)
—Siva (2e L&L)
—Soma (2e L&L)
—Surya (1e DD, 2e L&L)
—Tvashtri (1e DD, 2e L&L)
—Ushas (1e DD, 2e L&L)
—Varuna (1e DD, 2e L&L)
—Vayu (2e L&L)
—Vishnu (1e DD)
—Yama (1e DD, 2e L&L)

Additional Possible Indian Deities:
—Ravanna, ruler of the Rakshasas.
—Garuda, king of the birds.

There are probably other deities that should be added as well, but I’m not familiar enough with the mythos to know at this point.

Don’t forget the notation that Ravanna was given stats in Dragon #84.

Indra’s the one I’d be a little wary of, as in actual mythology he’s far from evil. I’m guessing someone took his characterization from the later Puranas, which heavily diminish his role, but even then he’s not evil, just a bit of an ass.

Even in this diminished state, he’s still so impressed by Karna’s humility that he gives the warrior his own Vasavishakti, a one-use weapon that can literally kill anything, including immortals.

Well written, evil deities can still work with pantheons, like Loki and Set. :)

But as I said, I don’t know much about the religion so I’d be loathe to touch it without good research, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they mischaracterized some of the deities in various pantheons (and lord knows there are others who appear to be made up or completely misconstrued).
